Case Study: Designing A Robust But Easy-To-Use Website For a Local Industrial Electrician

The Goal

Our client, an experienced commercial and industrial electrician in the Cleveland area, already had decades of experience to their name. For industrial electrical work, LED retrofitting, troubleshooting and maintenance, they’re the local go-to, but their website didn’t tell that story. The owner finally decided that it was time for an upgrade and contacted the team at Alt Media Studios to inquire about our custom web design services. They wanted a basic but easy-to-use website that made their industry and expertise clear. It should also include all the typical information you’ll find on any website, like an About Us page, services offered, and how to get in touch. We knew we could handle that, and so we set out to give our client so much more than they asked for.

The Strategy

In order to design and execute a website that accurately reflected our client’s expertise and communicated their reliability while still being responsive to customer needs, we came at the project from a customer’s standpoint. They focused on making contact information easily accessible, since a potential customer with a serious electrical issue would want the quickest route to contact our client. Otherwise, they might just opt for a competitor with a more direct call to action on their website. 

Our client’s trustworthienss–another key quality in someone as important as an electrician–wasn’t coming through. They had a large staff, had been in business for decades, and had handled major commercial and industrial contracts locally, but you’d never guess that by looking at their former website. To underscore their reliability and history we made sure to clearly highlight the year they were founded on multiple parts of the newly designed homepage. Branding also played a key role in our thought process. With a lack of branding, how can a customer recognize if this was their actual site or a scam? We opted for more memorable branding that aligned with their business and helped them to stand out from the competition. 

The client was also concerned about SEO, so we made sure that we included that consideration at every step of the process. The former site was also lacking in content, which everyone knows is a key part of a robust SEO effort, so going forward that will definitely be part of the conversation too. 

The Results

Once we had our mock-up website designed, we sent it to our client, reviewed it with them for edits and then checked back in for approval. Once everything was in place and key data was plugged into the new site, we met again to flesh out more details. We offered some suggestions in that consultation and our client took much of our advice.

So, what did they think in the end? Our client wanted a basic, informational website and was also looking for help with SEO. We gave his website a much-needed facelift, but it went far beyond an aesthetic upgrade. We were also able to include relevant company information and use our design skills to convey our client’s ability, trustworthiness and stability as a local fixture for many decades. Our client knew what information he wanted to be included, but he didn’t have a clear design vision. We’re happy to report that we delivered what he didn’t even know he was looking for! Thumbs up, all around–everyone loves the new site and is proud to share it with their clients and contacts.

The Takeaway

This was a smooth one, but there’s always a takeaway to be found. Our client had a clear list of must-haves on their new website–they even sent us a document listing them out! We love that in a client! Knowing what you need and want is the first step.
