"Google Account Already Exists" in Google Apps

Google Apps is amazing, but if you are setting up your administrator account and there is an existing Google Account for that username, you may be stuck as we were. 

Here's how to resolve your problem:

1. Setup an administrator account with a different username if there's already a Google Account for the username you wanted to use
2. Verify ownership of your domain
3. Create a new user with the username you originally wanted to use and, when prompted, "claim" the account
4. Once claimed, adjust that new user's privileges to have administrator access
5. Adjust your account settings so the primary administrator is the new user
6. Logout of existing account, log back in as the new user
7. Delete the temporary administrator account from step
