Over the weekend, Microsoft Corp rushed to fix a bug in the popular web browser, Internet Explorer, after being informed by a security firm that “Hackers may have already exploited it in attacks on some U.S. Companies.”

Will Microsoft put  everyone's mind at ease with the release of their counter-attack in the way of providing a security update to all its users? NO.

Although Microsoft will be moving fast to inculcate this security update, they have officially announce that users of the 13 years old operating system Window XP, will not benefit from the update as Microsoft halted their support of this product earlier in the month. Given the depth of the exploit and close proximity to Windows XP’s support cut-off date, critics will say Microsoft should consider issuing one last fix.

WHAT MIGHT YOU DO, AS ONE OF THE 25% OF PERSONS STILL USING WINDOWS XP?

FireEye Inc., the security firm that discovered the vulnerability, has given us a few options to consider:

  • Use another web browser other than Internet Explorer
  • Disable Adobe Flash. “The attack will not work without Adobe Flash,” it said. “Disabling the Flash plugin within IE will prevent the exploit from functioning.”
  • Consider upgrading to a more recent version of its operating system. For users unsure whether their existing PCs can support Windows 8, Microsoft offers a software tool called Windows Upgrade Assistant.

We recommend the first option there, use another web browser.  Currently you can utilize Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox which we feel are better options.
